<br />1.. <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 26, 1972 <br /> <br />",- <br /> <br />Inasmuch as local downtown merchants and members of the Retail Merchants Association <br /> <br />have not completed their study of the suggested "removal" of parking meters within <br /> <br />the downtown business area for a trial period, and pursuant to the request of <br /> <br />representatives of the merchants, Council continued consideration of the suggestion <br /> <br />to its forthcoming October 10th meeting, meanwhile suggesting that the Retail <br /> <br />Merchants Association confer with the Planning Commission prior to the October 10th <br /> <br />Council meeting and coordinate their findings with those of the Commission. <br /> <br />,.- <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council appointed Dr. N. Grant <br /> <br />Tubbs (Director of Instruction for the Martinsville City School System) to membership <br /> <br />on the Regional Juvenile Probation Commission, which Commission---in concert with the <br /> <br />Sixth Regional Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court and the Honorable J. English Ford, <br /> <br />Judge thereof--will supervise the operation of the proposed probation house at the <br /> <br />southwest corner of Cleveland and Brown Streets, for which a Special-Use Permit was <br /> <br />issued July 25, 1972, and said Commission being established pursuant to Article 4.1 <br /> <br />of Chapter 8 of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended). <br /> <br />After considering the following bids received for the construction of the extension <br /> <br />of Lester Street, from East Main Street (or a section adjacent thereto) to Commonwealth <br /> <br />Boulevard, and upon recommendation of Public Works Director George W. Brown, Council <br /> <br />accepted the lowest bid received (viz., that of Thompson-Arthur Paving Company) and <br /> <br />awarded contract thereto: <br /> <br />Bidders <br /> <br />Covington & Jefferson (late bid) <br /> <br />Amounts <br /> <br />Laramore Construction <br /> <br />. $ 52,979.69; <br />55,521,65; and <br />48,723.15. <br /> <br />Thompson-Arthur <br />
