8

TUESDAY

SEPTEMBER 12, 1972

current budget, with balance payable within the 1973-74 budget year and carrying

an annual interest rate of 6%. Council directed that the Legion be apprised of

Council's appreciation of the Legion's cooperation in this matter.

City Manager Noland informed Council that, with no shelter facilities presently

available to accommodate City Transit patrons waiting at a central point for bus

service and/or transfer, it may be advisable for the City to provide such a

facility on the rear portion of the City's Fayette Street Parking Lot; however,

Mr. Noland further informed Council that he has been informally advised that the

Henry County Board of Supervisors will make available for such purpose the City's

former parking meter test shop (being a portion of the City's former shop facility),

now owned by Henry County, at no rental cost to the City, on a month-to-month

basis, with a save-harmless clause; whereupon, Council unanimously expressed its

appreciation to the Supervisors and authorized the usage of said property for such

purpose and on the conditions stipulated by the Supervisors.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council expressed concurrence

with Mayor West's letter dated September 8, 1972, in which he delineated present

areas in which our citizens might be especially concerned, viz., (1) revitalization

of downtown; (2) environment (clean streets, air and lots, and orderly trash

collection); and (3) traffic, parking, and location of stop lights, etc., and--to

this end--established the following committees, in addition to that previously

named for the revitalization of downtown, with members of Council named thereto as

chairmen and coordinators:

Environment
Councilman Hobson;
Mr. George W. Brown, representing the City administration; and
Mrs. Sallie M. Clark, representing the public.
Traffic & Parking
Vice-Mayor Boaz;
Mr. Irving R. McGhee, representing the City administration; and
Mr. James H. Barnes, former State Police Sergeant, representing the public.
