~44

TUESDAY

AUGUST 23, 1977

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia,

with Mayor William D. Hobson presiding, was held Tuesday, August 23, 1977, in the

Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz.,

William D. Hobson, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr., Vice Mayor; Barry A. Greene; L. D. Oakes;

and Francis T. West.

After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting

held August 9, 1977.

Mayor Hobson called to the attention of all citizens the fact that, in recent days or

weeks, a large number of homes have been broken into and burglarized, some even when

occupied; and, in an effort to apprehend those guilty of these crimes as well as to

protect persons and property, Mayor Hobson solicited the aid of citizens, that they may

be on guard and might assist the City's Police Department in this cause.

Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a

petition, as filed by Mr. Benjamin R. Gardner, Attorney at Law, under date of April

26, 1977, for and on behalf of the present and/or prospective owners of property

identified as "226 Starling Avenue", seeking a "P-2 Professional" zoning of said

property. There being no objections registered by any citizen to the requested

rezoning, and in acceptance of the Planning Commission's recently-filed recommendation

that the request be granted, Council unanimously granted said request through the

adoption of the following ordinance amending the City's Zoning Map:

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia,
in regular meeting assembled August 23, 1977, that the Zoning Map
of the City of Martinsville, Virginia be--and is hereby--amended to
effect and reflect a "P-2 Professional" zoning of that property
situated at the northeast corner of Starling and Cleveland Avenues,
presently identified as "226 Starling Avenue" and owned by the late
Mildred B. Stone and/or her heirs.
