<br />36 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />APRIL 12, 1977 <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />~_. <br /> <br />In light of this information, Council was asked for its opinion and direction <br /> <br />on the question of proceeding with the recently-authorized improvements to <br /> <br />a section of Liberty Street or deferring same until the State Highway <br /> <br />Department might undertake the project on a shared-cost basis; whereupon, <br /> <br />upon motion by Councilman Oakes, seconded by Councilman Greene, and <br /> <br />unanimously carried, Council directed that the City's Public Works <br /> <br />Department proceed with its proposed improvements, with the understanding <br /> <br />that the authorized improvements would not interfere with or jeopardize <br /> <br />the State Highway Department's planning, funding and/or constructing of <br /> <br />future improvements to the Liberty Street-Route 108 project. <br /> <br />Council referred to the Planning Commission, for its consideration and <br /> <br />recommendation, a letter from Davis Oil Company requesting permission to <br /> <br />construct a canopy over a gasoline island at a service station located <br /> <br />at 1105 Brookdale Road. <br /> <br />In discussing the recent flood disaster in Southwest Virginia and whether <br /> <br />officially to offer assistance to that area and the flood victims, Council <br /> <br />suggested that City Manager Noland first make inquiry of appropriate <br /> <br />agencies and/or officials as to whether the City's assistance is now needed. <br /> <br />Pursuant to applicable State statutes, and specifically to Section 2.1-344 <br /> <br />of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), by a recorded and unanimous <br />
