... 'lo.'n
~ ~ 0

TUESDAY

NOVEMBER 9, 1976

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Vice-Mayor William D. Hobson presiding, was held Tuesday,

November 9, 1976, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M.,

all members being present, viz., William D. Hobson, Vice Mayor; Barry A.

Greene; L. D. Oakes; and Francis T. West.

After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its

regular meeting held October 26, 1976, and of its special meeting held

November l, 1976.

Prior to considering its regular order of business, Council--through

Vice-Mayor Hobson--presented to Mr. Jesse E. Lovell a token of appreciation,

on behalf of the City, in recognition of his employment service with the

City from August 1, 1942 to his date of retirement on October 31, 1976.

Councilman West presented the following prepared statement in which

Mr. J. Pat Sutton, for reasons stated therein, removed himself from

consideration for appointment to membership on the Council for the

unexpired term of former Councilman G. S. Fitz-Hugh, Jr., who resigned as

of October 31, 1976:

It befalls me to notify his many friends and supporters
that Pat Sutton is removing himself from consideration
for appointment to council. Pat and I discussed the
situation and for purposes of community harmony he has
made this decision. Pat further decided that he did
not want to be the issue; rather, he would prefer for
the council to look after the needs of the City without
any sidetracking over personalities.
