28~

TUESDAY

NOVEMBER 23, 1976

-

as future decisions, I expect to use my best judgment in
the best interest of all the citizens of Martinsville.
This will be my concern for the next one year and nine
months.

Mr. Chairman, I consider it a privilege to nominate
William D. Hobson for the office of Mayor of the City of
Martinsvi11e.

Councilman Oakes nominated Councilman West for the position of Mayor. There being

no other nominations, the nominations were closed. Voting for Councilman Hobson

-

were Councilmen Cole, Greene and Hobson. Accordingly, Councilman Hobson was

declared Mayor for the term ending August 31, 1978.

Nominations were then invited for the office of Vice Mayor, with Councilman

West nominating Councilman Oakes and (with) Mayor-Councilman Hobson nominating

Councilman Cole. There being no other nominations for this position, the

nominations were closed. Voting for Councilman Oakes were Councilmen West and

Oakes; and, voting for Councilman Cole were Councilmen Hobson, Greene, and

Cole. Accordingly, Councilman Cole was declared Vice-Mayor for the term ending

August 31, 1978. Both Councilmen Hobson and Cole were duly sworn in for the

respective positions of Mayor and Vice-Mayor by Miss Christine Koger, Deputy

Clerk of Martinsvi1le City Circuit Court. In accepting his election as Mayor,

Mr. Hobson made the following statement:

I accept this position with a great deal of humility
and appreciation and will do my best to justify your
faith and confidence expressed by your votes here this
evening. There will be no change in your City
government. I have only one vote....the same as the
four other Councilmen. We have the City Manager form
of government and not the Mayor form of government.
All major decisions are Council decisions. My voting
record for the past eight years-plus will show my
interest in all of our citizens of our City. We have
good people in our City government and, by all of us
working together for the good of all, we can have a
truly great ALL-AMERICAN City.
