Voting for Mr. Sutton were Councilmen West and Oakes; and, voting <br /> <br />for Mr. Cole were Vice-Mayor Hobson and Councilman Greene. A majority <br /> <br />vote for either nominee not having been obtained, the nominations were <br /> <br />re-opened, with Councilman West nominating Mr. J. Pat Sutton and <br /> <br />Councilman Greene nominating Mr. W. C. Cole, Jr. Following comments <br /> <br />by Councilmen West and Greene as to the qualifications of the respective <br /> <br />nominees, Council received comments from several citizens present, <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />advocating the appointing by Council of Mr. Sutton, and, also, from <br /> <br />another citizen who pointed out that, if consideration of nominees is <br /> <br />to be limited to the May 4th candidates now eligible for appointment, <br /> <br />Mr. John R. McCraw, Jr., was also a candidate. Voting for Mr. Sutton <br /> <br />were Councilmen West and Oakes; and, voting for Mr. Cole were <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor Hobson and Councilman Greene. After some discussion, Council <br /> <br />authorized City Attorney Worthy to initiate proceedings by which Council <br /> <br />might request the 1976 Virginia General Assembly to amend the City's <br /> <br />Charter whereby the Council, when it is unable to fill a vacancy on the <br /> <br />Council in the manner now prescribed by the City Charter, and the Charter <br /> <br />being silent on alternative procedures, some "relief" measure will be <br /> <br />available. <br /> <br />,..-- <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br />W. ~~ :~~~n, Clerk of Council <br />) <br /> <br />,'- <br />
