<br />L~4 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 10, 1976 <br /> <br />seeking support of enactment of legislation to be offered in the 1976 <br /> <br />Virginia General Assembly whereby the lfARC Workshop will be declared <br /> <br />exempt from both State and local taxation on property held by the <br /> <br />MARC Workshop, it being noted that on certain of petitioner's <br /> <br />property the City's Commissioner of the Revenue has assessed <br /> <br />local property taxes because of the fact that products are being <br /> <br />manufactured and sold by the Workshop, though by-products of <br /> <br />petitioner's educational and training programs for the physically <br /> <br />and mentally handicapped persons. It was also noted that the <br /> <br />MARC Workshop is a charitable corporation formed in 1969 <br /> <br />exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes. <br /> <br />Upon motion~ duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council <br /> <br />adopted the following resolution in support of the aforementioned <br /> <br />legislation: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, MARC Workshop~ Inc.~ a charitable corporation, <br />was formed in 1969 exclusively for charitable, <br />scientific~ and educational purposes~ specifically to <br />provide education~ training and sheltered employment <br />for physically and mentally handicapped persons; and~ <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the property, both real and personal, of <br />MARC Workshop, Inc. has not been subjected to <br />taxation by the Commonwealth of Virginia or any <br />of its political subdivisions since its formation; <br />and~ <br /> <br />IVHEREAS, a question has been raised as to whether <br />said property is exempt from taxation under the <br />existing statutes of the Commonwealth of Virginia; <br />and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS~ the directors of MARC Workshop~ Inc. desire <br />to eliminate all doubt as to the tax-exempt status <br />of the property of MARC Workshop~ Inc.~ by the <br />enactment of special legislation conferring <br />a tax-exempt status upon same; and~ <br />
