<br />,..,. t <br /> <br />. . <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MARCH 11, 1980 <br /> <br />.- <br /> <br />therefore, ways and means need to be developed toward involving the general <br /> <br />public in this cause. <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor Cole also reported that satisfactory abatement of the disagreeable <br /> <br />odors emanating from the area of the City's sewage treatment (Water Pollution <br /> <br />Control) plant has not been achieved, indicating that the problem presently <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />lies with the City and, too, requesting that a status or progress report, <br /> <br />including the types of waste being received by the City's plant and the treat- <br /> <br />ment processes thereof, be presented to Council at its next regular meeting. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br />~,',' j't'~"'c' , <br /> <br />W. Yeaman, Clerk of Council <br /> <br />ADDENDUM <br /> <br />The following resolution, directed by Council to be made a part of these <br />minutes (covering meeting held March 11, 1980), pertains to--and supplements-- <br />Council's action taken during said March 11th meeting, wherein was authorized <br />the filing of a final application for a grant of $600,000.00 to finance the <br />cost of rehabilitating selected sub-standard residences: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Martinsville City Council recognizes that its citizens <br />should have the opportunity to reside in affordable, safe housing <br />wherever they desire; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Fair Housing Act (Section 36-86 of the Code <br />of Virginia) prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, <br />religion, national origin or sex with respect to the selling, leasing, <br />renting, managing, and financing of residential housing; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is the policy of the United States to provide, within <br />constitutional limitations, for fair housing throughout the United <br />States (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, Public Law <br />90-284); now, therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />that it hereby supports the principle of equal housing opportunity <br />for all of its citizens; and, that it hereby encourages all citizens <br />and businesses, particularly those involved in the selling, leasing, <br />renting, managing and/or financing of housing in the City, to adhere <br />fully to the Virginia and Federal fair housing laws. <br />
