<br />I-~' {-~ <br /> <br />II ~ i^....i <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 26, 1980 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, as a result of a break-in and robbery of the Mason & Son Garage, <br />at 103 Railroad Street, between the hours of 6:30 P.M., February 21, 1980 <br />and 2:00 A.M., February 22, 1980, the owner-operator, Mr. Ken Mason, may <br />be unable to continue in a business which for twenty-nine years, through <br />Mr. Mason and his father before him, has served its customers with <br />distinction and integrity; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it not only behooves but also is incumbent upon the Council of <br />the City of Martinsville, Virginia, as a duly-elected governing body, to <br />exert every effort to protect our citizens, their homes and businesses, <br />from any encroachment upon their rights and properties, whether by <br />unlawful design and action or through wanton disregard; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the most effective means of protecting our citizens and <br />curtailing of crime can be achieved only with the active and united <br />support of all concerned citizens; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />in regular meeting assembled, that: <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />(1) It urges all parents to instill in their children, with <br />the aid of schools, churches and civic organizations and <br />by their own good example, to the greatest degree that <br />sense of individual responsibility which makes for good <br />citizenship; <br />(2) It solicits the assistance of insurance companies and law <br />enforcement personnel toward instructing our citizens and <br />business firms in the best methods to attain maximum <br />protection and security for themselves and their properties; <br />(3) It challenges our citizens, and especially our young people, <br />to rally to the support of their government in its efforts <br />to make Martinsville the best and safest place in which to <br />live; and <br />(4) It hereby calls upon our local law enforcement personnel to <br />assess local conditions and needs and to present to City <br />Council a positive program by which lawlessness can be reduced <br />to a minimum and whereby those who yet dare to remain outside <br />the law will not escape prosecution and the penalties therefor. <br /> <br />Present at this meeting, in support of the foregoing, were Mr. Ken Mason and other local <br /> <br />independent garage owners. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council authorized the selling of <br /> <br />approximately eight (8) acres of land in the City's Industrial Park to Stanley W. Bowles <br />
