<br />('i ("', 4) <br />,:,) .j '....I <br /> <br />THURSDAY <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 20, 1979 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor William D. Hobson presiding, was held on Thursday, September 20, 1979, in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 p.m., the September 20th date having been <br /> <br />previously established as a variation from the regularly scheduled meeting which would <br /> <br />have normally been held on September 25th. All members of Council were present, namely, <br /> <br />William D. Hobson, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr., Vice Mayor; Barry A. Greene; L. D. Oakes; <br /> <br />and Francis T. West. <br /> <br />Following the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular meeting <br /> <br />held on September II, 1979. <br /> <br />In the interest of the Western Virginia Emergency Medical Services Council, Ms. Kathryn P. <br /> <br />Miller, Executive Director thereof, appeared before Council to explain the Medical Services <br /> <br />Council's activities and objectives and requested City Council to officially endorse the work <br /> <br />of the group, which hopes to secure a Federal grant which would be used to make a feasibility <br /> <br />study towards implementing a more comprehensive emergency medical service system in this <br /> <br />region. There was specific discussion on the role of the local volunteer emergency services <br /> <br />group, in relation to the regional council and its activities, and various questions were <br /> <br />raised and discussed. Following the discussion, Council was in unanimous approval of improved <br /> <br />emergency services for the area. In supporting the action, Councilman Oakes explained that <br /> <br />he served on the Board of Directors of Martinsville-Henry ~ounty Volunteer Rescue Squad as <br /> <br />well as on the Advisory Board of said Emergency Services Council. <br /> <br />There was read a report from the City Planning Commission in which the Commission recommended <br /> <br />approval of the petition submitted August 14, 1979 by Virginia Mirror Company, requesting <br /> <br />the closing of certain streets adjacent to the existing Company area, which area is surrounded <br />
