<br />~-0 <br />)~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JUNE 26, 1979 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor William D. Hobson presiding, was held Tuesday, June 26, 1979, in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz., William D. <br /> <br />Hobson, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr., Vice Mayor; Barry A. Greene; L. D. Oakes; and <br /> <br />Francis T. West. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting <br /> <br />held June 12, 1979, with the proviso that, as an addendum to said minutes, there be <br /> <br />included a reference to the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce's Housing <br /> <br />Committee's recently-released report and the fact that Mr. George W. Brown, Assistant <br /> <br />City Manager-Public Works Director, was requested (by Council) to respond thereto. <br /> <br />Council directed its Clerk to express Council's condolences to Mrs. June West (wife of <br /> <br />Councilman Francis T. West) in the recent loss of her mother and the more recent loss of <br /> <br />her father. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a petition, <br /> <br />submitted by Messrs. Fred D. Gill and Silver C. Williams, seeking the closing and abandonment <br /> <br />of that portion of G Street ("unopened") which lies between First and Second Streets, subject <br /> <br />to the reservation at the east end of said G Street (at First Street) of forty feet for a <br /> <br />vehicular turn-around, which petition was first acted upon by the Planning Commission at its <br /> <br />public hearing conducted July 20, 1978 (having been received and referred by Council to the <br /> <br />Commission on June 13, 1978), pending subsequent and final action by the Commission after <br /> <br />sufficient time had been allowed for possible development of properties on First Street <br /> <br />between F and G Streets. Under date of May 18, 1979, by report the Commission concluded that <br /> <br />development of properties, hereinabove referred to, appears not to be physically and <br />
