ENERGY NEEDS

With modern technology today this world is smaller than a state was fifty

years ago and for some time the energy experts, scientists and cconomi sts have

warned us of our energy problems. A seemingly small disruption abroad can

cause a great effect on our economy. Until a few years ago many of us shared

the profound conviction of most Americans that our country had unlimited space

and resources. Today, we have only a few, if any, public issues confronting

us that will touch the lives of our children and grandchildren, if not ourselves,

more closely than the ability of the United States to command the energy resources

that are necessary to sustain our economy. With our ever increa sing demand for

energy} we find ourselves in a position where a five percent curtailment of oil can

cause.a crisis.
I
IRecentlY the citizens of Cleveland,
r

Ohio, chose to pay $6.00 a month increase

in taxes to raise $25 million rather than sell their power plant for $50 million.

The citizens of Cleveland chose to raise their taxes rather than sell their power

plant because they recognized the profit potential of owning the:jr own generating

facilities.

The previous example should help you realize the value of our small generation

plant which pumps thousands of dollars into the Electric Fund each year. Last year,

it 'is estimated that the small plant showed a net profit of $120,000. Our engineer,

Mr. Robert Corekin, feels by 1985 the City will need about 46 megawatts for demand

and 188 million kilowatts of energy. The Ridgeway Project will increase our pro-

duction of energy by 16%. Our projected demand figures show that the City can easily

absorb all the power provided by the Ridgeway plant and we will still need to purchase

the remainder of the needs from Appalachian Power Company.

This project will save 2,500,000 gallons of oil per year. This is important

because of the seemingly endless world-wide turmoil and vacillating national policy

which has resulted in shortages of oil.
