0.1
>:,; ~~

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 1978

economic history of the City. Mr. Hartig further informed Council that, although

the Norfolk & Western Railway Company officials have made no decision as to whether

to rebuild this station or relocate at some other point, it is believed that the railway

company would be receptive to expressions of community interest and efforts toward

restoring the station for usage, perhaps, as a museum or to "house" some community group

activities. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council asked Mr. Hartig

and Mr. R. P. Gravely, Jr., the latter being long interested in--and an authority on--local

history, to serve as a special committee to explore the possibilities of restoring the

station, contingent upon the railway company's plans therefor, and of the usages to which

it might be put.

Ms. Phyllis Coleman, Project Planner for Henry County, with several of her associates,

appeared before Council with the request that Council give consideration to the City's

participating actively in the "Clean Community System", an organization affiliated with

the "Keep America Beautiful" group, now involved in promoting litter control efforts in

various sections of the nation through the updating of local ordinances applicable thereto

as well as through educational measures and the developing of cooperative community-wide

spirit from a positive point of view, an outstanding example of which was so ably

demonstrated and/or portrayed in a short movie-film (which Council viewed) on the dramatic

accomplishments in this field by the City of Macon, Georgia. Council referred this request

to the City's administrative staff for its consideration--in consultation with Ms. Coleman--

and recommendation to Council.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council authorized the filing of an

application for a Litter Control grant to fund the second year of the City's activities in

this field, the first year of which will soon end.
