<br />,ns <br />l ,j <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />AUGUST 22, 1978 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsvi11e, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor William D. Hobson presiding, was held Tuesday, August 22, 1978, in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz., <br /> <br />William D. Hobson, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr., Vice Mayor; Barry A. Greene; L. D. Oakes; <br /> <br />and Francis T. West. <br /> <br />Following the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />meeting held August 8, 1978. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a public hearing on <br /> <br />American Furniture Company's petition (filed with Council on June 13, 1978 and recommended <br /> <br />by the Planning Commission for approval under report date of July 21, 1978, with certain <br /> <br />conditions) seeking the closing and abandonment of that portion of Hairston Street which <br /> <br />extends westward from the west right-of-way margin of Starling Avenue to the terminus of <br /> <br />said Hairston Street at petitioner's property line, said portion or section being for a <br /> <br />distance of approximately 143 feet. There being no objections registered by any citizen <br /> <br />to the requested and proposed closing, Council unanimously authorized and directed said <br /> <br />closing and abandonment, subject to the following conditions recommended by the Planning <br /> <br />Commission: <br /> <br />(1) that reservation of utility easements be made in favor of the <br />City; <br />(2) that sufficient right-of-way, yet to be determined, be reserved <br />in favor of the City for the eventual widening of Starling <br />~erme; aoo <br />(3) that American Furniture Company will reimburse the City for the <br />cost of any necessary maintenance of a traffic signal detector <br />while located in the street portion hereby abandoned. <br />
