<br />2 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JANUARY 10, 1978 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council adopted the following <br /> <br />ordinance (amending Section 10-75 of the Martinsville City Code) prohibiting the <br /> <br />parking of vehicles in designated fire lanes within parking lots open to the public <br /> <br />and designed to accommodate fifty or more vehicles: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Section 46.1-181.1 of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and <br />as amended) authorizes the governing body of any city in <br />Virginia to adopt ordinances regulating the parking of motor <br />vehicles in parking lots open to the public and designed to <br />accommodate fifty or more vehicles; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the proprietor of one such parking lot located at a <br />shopping center within the City of Martinsville, Virginia, has <br />requested the enactment by Martinsville City Council of an <br />ordinance which would prohibit parking of vehicles within said <br />parking lot in areas reserved for the use of fire trucks, <br />ambulances, and other emergency vehicles; now therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, in regular meeting assembled January 10, 1978, that <br />Division 1 of ARTICLE IV of Chapter 10 of the Code of the <br />City of Martinsville, Virginia (1971, and as amended) be and <br />is hereby amended by the adding thereto of the following, <br />identified as Section 10-75(c): <br /> <br />No person shall park his or her vehicle within a <br />parking lot open to the public, where designed to <br />accommodate fifty or more vehicles, at any place <br />therein such parking lot where such place is defined <br />by painted yellow lines and where signs prohibiting <br />such parking have been erected or painted in <br />conspicuous yellow letters in the area so defined. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that an emergency exists <br />and that this ordinance shall become effective on and after the <br />date of this enactment. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged with appreciation a donation of $5,612.00 from the Martinsville <br /> <br />Community Recreation Association and, pursuant to the donor's wishes, unanimously <br /> <br />appropriated said sum toward current renovations of the former Ohev Zion Synagogue <br /> <br />for the Senior Citizens Center project. <br />
