NOVEMBER 23, 1982 TUESDAY Council acknowledged Mayor Cole's report on the recent Highway & Transportation Conference held in Lexington, Virginia, attended by Mayor Cole. - Council unanimously expressed its support of a recent action by the Henry County Board of Supervisors in which the Board amended Henry County's Comprehensive Plan whereby, pending certain procedures and funding, the Blue Ridge Airport's principal runway can be extended to provide not only greater safety for aircraft currently using this facility but also to accommodate larger aircraft and thereby enlarge the possibilities of attracting new industry to the area as well as lend support to the expanding by local industries of their present facilities. Council noted that this action by the Supervisors is consistent with the joint interest and efforts of the two governmental bodies toward promoting and ensuring economic growth and stability for the community. Council acknowledged an invitation to be represented (by a member of Council along with City Sheriff Maynard H. Gilley) at the forthcoming Special Issues Seminar in Virginia Beach, Virginia, sponsored by the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried by a recorded vote, and pursuant to Sections 2.1,-344 (a)(l) and 2.1-344 (a)(6) of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), Council convened into an Executive Session for the purposes of (1) considering the appoint- ment or reappointment of five members to the City's Transportation Safety Commission for four-year terms beginning January 1, 1983, and (2) considering certain legal matters. Upon reconvening into regular session, Council took no action on either of these matters. - The meeting was declared adjourned. W. H. Council
