TUESDAY

JUNE 22, 1982

-.

I can not imagine anyone performing the job of City Attorney better than Dave
Worthy. Dave doesn't say much during the Council meetings, and many of you
probably feel he's asleep, but I can say from experience that he is tough,
hardworking, and good; and I will miss working with him.

When Don Edmonds came here from Texas, he told me that our local press is
as good as any he had ever seen. And, tonight, I include the press in my
list of thank-you's. I think that we, as a community, are very fortunate to
have reporters, editors, and publishers who are fair, who are ethical, and
who are truly concerned with serving in the best interests of the community.
I particularly want to mention Owen Hall because, while reporters have come
and gone and some, like Henry Gilbert, have gone and come back, Owen has been
here the whole time -- all eight years.

To all the City Staff and employees -- when I work in this building where
I've spent so many hours, I feel as comfortable as when I work in my own
store. Throughout the years I've called one after the other of you to ask
questions or for something that required research, and the response has
always been cordial and professional. All of you do a mighty good job and
I'll miss you.

I want to express my appreciation to Lee Lintecum (Henry County Administrator)
and Jim Wagoner (Chairman of the Henry County Board of Supervisors). I think
the cooperative efforts of the Henry County and Martinsville governing bodies
have shown more progress the last six months than any time I can remember;
and, I give credit to the understanding, efforts, and leadership of Lee and Jim.

For six years I served under two mayors -- Harry L. Boaz and William ("Bill")
D. Hobson. I thank them tonight for their guidance and their friendship.
Special thanks go to former Councilman Don Hartford, who helped with my
campaigns and (who) guided me through so may issues with his keen knowledge
and ins igh t .

-

To the current Council -- Bill, Henry, L. D., and Francis -- I thank you for
electing me Mayor and for the cooperation and support you have given me. You
have made the last two years very happy for me and very productive, I feel,
for the citizens and I sincerely appreciate your efforts.

When I announced in February (1982) that I was stepping down, I explained that
this is not something I wanted to do because I find the job worthwhile and
enjoyable. I am doing this because my business responsibilities have increased
to the point where I am concerned that I cannot continue to perform at the
level that I feel Martinsville's citizens deserve. Although I am doing what I
feel is right, I do so with a heavy heart because I will miss this job so very
much.

--

Martinsville has been good to me and to my family, and I think that those of
us who love the City should do whatever we can to make Martinsville a better
place for all the people who live and work here. I sincerely thank the citizens
of Martinsville for giving me the opportunity to serve. It's been a pleasure and
an honor that I will remember and cherish as long as I live. Thank you and God
bless you all.
