J80

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 1983

Council has not been responsive to certain needs, Councilman West reiterated his known

position on Federally-subsidized housing, for whatever section of the City it might be pro-

posed; and, also, defined one aspect of Council's responsibility, viz., to enhance the

economy of the City and community by attracting business and industry to the community and

thereby create more and better job opportunities for its citizens.

Upon being apprised of the fact that accident insurance coverage for members of the Martins-

ville Volunteer Fire Company, provided by the City for many years, has not been upgraded

over the years to meet continually-escalating medical costs, Council unanimously authorized

the purchase of increased coverage and benefits, as set forth in Finance Director Richard D.

Fitts' memorandum thereon (dated September 2, 1983) to City Manager Edmonds, with a first-

year premium cost of (approximately) $1,795.00.

Council acknowledged receipt of a proclamation issued by The Honorable Charles S. Robb,

Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, designating the month of September as "Voter

Registration Month".

Council also acknowledged receipt of status reports (from Vice-Mayor Oakes and Assistant City

Manager-Public Works Director George W. Brown) on on-going studies of the City-School employee

medical group insurance programs and the bids recently received thereon, with an indication

that a more complete report, with recommendations, will be presented to Council at its forth-

coming September 27th meeting.

Assistant City Manager-Public Works Director George W. Brown informed Council that the

building numbering program, recently instituted, is virtually completed, with acknowledgment

expressed of the splendid cooperation by the general public in making this program successful.
