11

TUESDAY

MAY 24, 1983

not own an electric system and because it entered into a contract with a private cor-

poration. Council concurred with these efforts, with the City's share of the MEPAVassess-

ment therefor already included in the current budget, noting that the City's share of the

capacity of this project, if awarded to MEPAV, will be equal to that of the City's proposed

Ridgeway Project.

-

City Manager Edmonds also informed Council that procedures are in progress for the trans-

fer of the Joseph Martin School property, vacated some two years ago, from the City School

Board to the City. In connection therewith, Mrs. Susan Caudill, representing former

teachers, former students, and the Souths ide area citizens, appeared before Council and

urged that Council defer its decision as to the future usage of this facility, pending

recommendations being developed by her group for its usage as a multi-purpose community

center under the supervision of the City's Recreation Department.

In tentative acceptance of the Planning Commission's recommendation that property owned

by Mrs. Maria P. Read at 110 Starling Avenue be rezoned from R-6 Residential to P-2 Pro-

fessional (on petition by J. Wayne Hill, Realtor, for Mrs. Read), Council called for a

duly-advertised public hearing to be conducted on this matter at Council's forthcoming

June 14th meeting.

-

Pursuant to Section 2.1-344(a)(1) of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended) and upon

motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried by a recorded vote, Council convened into an

Executive Session for the purposes of (a) considering the names of nominees for appoint-

ment or reappointment to certain boards and commissions and (b) discussing the assignment

of an employee of a public agency. Upon reconvening into regular session, Council took

no action on either of these matters.
