3

TUESDAY

FEBRUARY 22, 1983

Council referred to City Manager Edmonds certain observations made by Mr. Henry Gilbert

(of Radio Station WHEE) on the recent improvements to the Council Chamber's sound system.

City Manager Edmonds reported that the City has incurred costs (over and above normal costs)

of some $12,000.00 in labor, materials, and equipment operation necessitated by the unusually-

heavy snowfall which occurred February 11th-12th, in the removal of snow and ice from City

streets.

In extending best wishes to Mr. George W. Brown, Assistant City Manager and Public Works

Director, on the occasion of his birthday on February 22nd, Council also commended Mr.

Brown for his service to the City and its citizens during his employment with the City,

which began in June of 1951.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council reappointed Mayor Cole to the

Board of Directors of the New River Regional Police Academy for a new one-year beginning

April 1, 1983.

Council also unanimously reappointed, for two-year terms ending March 31, 1985, Mrs.

Marjorie D. Midkiff, The Reverend R. T. Anderson, and Messrs. Jud A. Gustin, James W.

Hopkins, and Walter W. Massie to membership on the Martinsville-Henry County Clean

Community Commission. Council held in abeyance, pending receipt of a list of nominees

from the Commission chairman and/or nominees from members of Council, the appointing of

members to the Commission to succeed present members (Mrs. Dennis W. Hammack and Messrs.

J. Burness Frith, Herbert O. Hughes, and Walter Milstead) who have elected not to be

reappointed at the expiration of their current terms on March 31, 1983.
