q54

TUESDAY

OCTOBER 23, 1984

VI.

School Programs (Current and Future)

VII.

Literary Fund's Permitted Usages for Capital Improvements

VII 1.

Tentatively-Proposed Capital Improvements

The School Board's tentative capital improvements program consisted of roof replace-

ments at the School System's six public school sites at an estimated cost of

$888,418.00, plus facility improvements estimated to cost $2,952,700.00, the bulk of

this latter cost being $1,500,000.00 for an addition to the Martinsville Senior High

School buildings (for physical education, science, and home economics facilities

expansion) and $900,000.00 for an addition to the Martinsville Junior High School

building.

During and after the School Boards' presentation, members of Council and School Board

members discussed various aspects of the data presented, followed by School Board

Chairman Carter's observation that the City is in need for more and better housing

and the School System needs more students. Meanwhile, Mayor Cole inquired into the

School Board's involvement with the currently-proposed Comprehensive Plan Update and

also urged the City School Board to continue meeting and be in contact with the Henry

County School Board in the exploration of matters of mutual interest.

City Manager Edmonds then posed the question as to whether the School Board';s capital

improvements program is merely a "wish list", as alluded to in the presentation, or a

program which could properly be included in the City's ten-year capital improvements

schedule recently presented to City Council.

Vice-Mayor Severt then declared this special meeting completed and adjourned.

w!U~';,':c;;rk of Council
"'--.
