~26

TUESDAY

AUGUST 28, 1984

Realizing that, unless a special meeting of the Council is called (before Council's

next regular meeting on September 11th), Council can not comply with the Henry County

Board of Supervisors' request (just received) that Council adopt a resolution on or

before September 10th, similar to that just adopted by the Supervisors in opposition

to a proposed reclassification of Smith River (between Martinsville and the Philpott

Dam) by the State Water Control Board and/or the Virginia Commission on Game & Inland

Fisheries, and with no indication that such a special meeting will be called, Council

directed City Manager Edmonds to write a letter to the Board of Supervisors reflecting

the fact that the City's position on this matter, similar to that of the Supervisors,

has already been made a matter of record by Assistant City Manager-Public Works

Director George W. Brown at a recent public hearing conducted by one of these agencies

in Salem, Virginia.

Mayor Cole, after citing the significance of the "Family Safety Day" project recently

conducted under the sponsorship of the City's Transportation Safety Commission, noted

that letters and comments are being received urging the continuation next year of the

Farmers' Market at the City's Fayette Street Parking Lot and, in connection therewith,

requested that City Manager Edmonds present a status report on this operation to

Council at its forthcoming September 11th regular meeting.

Mayor Cole then declared this meeting adjourned.

~"i'''''\..
