<br /><)8)8 <br />,~l <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MARCH 13, 1984 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor William C. Cole, Jr., presiding, was held Tuesday, March 13, 1984, in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz., <br /> <br />William C. Cole, Jr., Mayor; L. D. Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Henry C. Reed; Eliza H. Severt; <br /> <br />and Francis T. West. <br /> <br />After the invocation and Mayor Cole's cordial welcome to visitors present, Council <br /> <br />unanimously approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting held <br /> <br />February 28, 1984. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly-published notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a petition <br /> <br />recently filed with the Planning Commission by Mr. Ralph Lester and the Sherwood <br /> <br />Corporation, subsequently amended by petitioners to the extent of seeking the closing <br /> <br />and abandonment of only that portion of an alleyway situated on the southwest side of <br /> <br />Drewry Road between Lots Nos. 35A and 36 owned by Mr. Lester. The record notes that <br /> <br />Mr. Douglas K. Frith, Attorney at Law, represented petitioners in this matter. There <br /> <br />being no objections registered by any citizen to this petition, Mayor Cole declared <br /> <br />this hearing closed; whereupon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council <br /> <br />granted said petition and directed the closing and abandonment of said alleyway, as <br /> <br />previously recommended by the Planning Commission. <br /> <br />Also, pursuant to duly-published notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a <br /> <br />petition, denial of which has been previously recommended by the Planning Commission, <br /> <br />seeking the closing and abandonment of a twelve-foot alleyway which extends from the <br /> <br />west side of Pine Street in a southwesterly direction along the rear of properties <br /> <br />fronting East Church Street, in the 500-block of East Church Street. Petitioners <br /> <br />consisted of most of the owners of those properties within said block, situated on <br />
