2~

TUESDAY

FEBRUARY 14, 1984

difficulty and unsuccessful efforts, for the most part, in obtaining necessary rights-of-way

and/or construction easements, all of which now prompts the City administration to propose

a new approach to this project, viz., to construct curb-and-gutter along, and widen, Salem

Street, with an extension and reconstruction of Salem Street from Sellers Street westward

for a distance of approximately 240 feet, with sidewalk to be constructed along Salem Street

between Memorial Boulevard and Sellers Street, for which no additional right-of-way would

be required. In addition, to make this proposition workable, City Manager Edmonds proposed

-

the constructing of a short and protected left-lane turn into Memorial Boulevard at the

Salem Street intersection, along with certain other minor improvements (such as "signing"

and pavement markings). The cost of this revised project was estimated at $44,440.00, for

which sufficient funds, as hereinabove noted, are available in the current budget. In

response to an inquiry, this revised project cost does not include the cost (deemed minimal)

of relocating City electric facilities. Council expressed its concurrence with this

alternative proposal or new approach.

Upon motion, duly seconded, and by a recorded and unanimous vote, and pursuant to

sub-sections (1) and (2) of Section 2.l-344(a) of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended),

Council convened into an Executive Session for the purposes of (1) considering nominees

for appointment to fill a vacancy on the Anchor House Commission and (2) considering the

disposal of certain City-owned real property. Upon reconveneing into regular session,

Council took no action on the second of these items but, upon nomination by Vice-Mayor

Oakes, and by motion (duly seconded), unanimously reappointed Dr. James E. Calkins to

membership on said Anchor House Commission for a four-year term, beginning retroactively

to September 1, 1983.

-

Mayor Cole then declared this meeting adj ourned.

2,5.L~' \.._/,yJ:. 6'/" -...
