Vaughan, Sr., Chairman of <br /> <br />the Pulaski Board of Supervisors, on behalf of the starving and suffering peoples of <br /> <br />Eastern Africa, Council unanimously adopted the following resolution urging local <br /> <br />support of the American Red Cross, through cash donations to the local Red Cross Chap- <br /> <br />ter, in its efforts to supply food and medical supplies to the peoples of Eastern <br /> <br />Africa: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there exists a severe famine in Eastern Africa; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the people of that area are suffering from extreme hunger and <br />starvation resulting in countless deaths; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the citizens of Martinsville have in the past demonstrated a <br />caring and compassionate attitude towards persons in need; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, funds are needed to assist in providing food, medical supplies, <br />etc., for the people affected by this emergency; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the American Red Cross is providing aid to those suffering from <br />this famine through the "African Famine Relief" program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the local Chapter of the American Red Cross has collected more <br />than $25,000 from donations by citizens of Martinsville and Henry County; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the American Red Cross is to be commended for its sincere efforts <br />in assisting with this emergency; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />urges all citizens, businesses, industries and organizations to unite <br />behind the Red Cross in its efforts to meet the needs of the people of <br />Eastern Africa through their cash donations to this organizations. <br /> <br />Pursuant to the requirements of sub-sections (a)(l) and (a)(6) of Section 2.1-344 of <br /> <br />the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), and upon motion, duly seconded and unan- <br /> <br />imously carried by a recorded vote, Council convened into an Executive Session for <br /> <br />the purposes of (1) considering nominees for appointment or reappointment to the <br /> <br />Dan River VASAP Executive Board and to the CBD Commission, (2) discussing with legal <br />
