<br />41 ~ <br /> <br />FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1986 <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />A special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Friday, November 7t 1986t <br /> <br />in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 2:00 P.M., for the following <br /> <br />purposes: <br /> <br />1. To consider and act upon a proposed ordinance identified as Ordinance <br />No. 86-13, by which various work, sales and business activities, <br />formerly prohibited on Sundays (in Martinsville) by Section 18.2-341 <br />of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), will be allowed in <br />the City of Martinsville on Sundays; <br /> <br />--- <br /> <br />2. <br /> <br />To consider, in Executive Session, the disposing of certain real <br />property owned by the Martinsville Redevelopment & Housing Authority, <br />with Council acting in the capacity of Commissioners of the <br />Authority; and <br /> <br />3. To consider, in Executive Sessiont acquiring certain real property in <br />the name of the City of Martinsville. <br /> <br />With the exception of Vice-Mayor Clyde L. Williamst all members of Council were <br /> <br />presentt viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and <br /> <br />Allan McClain. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried (of members present), Council <br /> <br />adopted Ordinance No. 86-13, by which, effective November 8, 1986, various workt <br /> <br />sales and business activites, heretofore prohibited on Sundays by the State Code <br /> <br />Section hereinbefore cited, will be allowed in the City of Martinsville, in <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />accordance with the results of a referendum held on this matter November 4, <br /> <br />1986. The adopted ordinance follows, as does a copy of an order entered in the <br /> <br />Circuit Court for the City of Martinsville under date of November 6, 1986: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, at the general election held on November 4, 1986t and pursuant to <br />an order of the Circuit Court of the City of Martinsville, Virginiat <br />entered pursuant to the provisions of Section 15.1-29.5 of the 1950 Code <br />of Virginia, as amendedt a referendum was held on the question of whether <br />or not that law commonly known as the Sunday Closing Law shall have any <br />force or effect within the City of Martinsville, Virginia; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a majority of those voting in such election voted in favor of <br />allowing the various workt sales and business activities prohibited by <br />said Sunday Closing Law, and in effect voted in favor of repealing the <br />said Sunday Closing Law within the City of Martinsville, Virginia; and <br /> <br />- "-.. -..-___~_..,________m.__.___.__.,...__._____...____.._.__m..__.___ <br /> <br />..---..,.-_.___.__.m__"___.________.__.~.~__._.._.~..__ <br />
