<br />35~ <br /> <br />MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 1986 <br /> <br />/- <br /> <br />A special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Monday, August 25, 1986, <br /> <br />at the Williamsburg Restaurant, Broad Street, Martinsville, Virginia, for the <br /> <br />purpose of conferring with members of the Martinsville-Heory County Economic <br /> <br />Development Corporation on matters of mutual interest, particularly those <br /> <br />pertaining to the economic development of Martinsville and Henry County. All <br /> <br />members of Council were present, viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. Williams, <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan McClain. Members <br /> <br />of the Economic Development Corporation present were J. Thomas Vaughan, Chair- <br /> <br />man, B. M. ("Bill") Brammer, Wilbur S. Doyle, J. Burness Frith, Irving M. <br /> <br />Groves, Jr., and Jack F. Hankins. Also present were George W. Brown, City <br /> <br />Manager, and Lawrence C. Wuensch, Executive Director of the Economic Develop- <br /> <br />ment Corporation, as well as representatives of the local news media. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />The meeting began at twelve o'clock noon With lunch, followed by invocation by <br /> <br />EDC Chairman Vaughan. Mayor Oakes then stated the purpose of this meeting and, <br /> <br />too, expressed recognition and Council's appreciation of the efforts and <br /> <br />accomplishments of the Economic Development Commission. <br /> <br />Executive Director Wuensch, after reviewing the purpose, goals, and objectives <br /> <br />of the Economic Development CorpOration, referred to the "marketability" of the <br /> <br />community which is enhanced or limited by the community's ability to support <br /> <br />(new) growth (with utilities, services, and sites), by the attitude of the <br /> <br />community towards growth, the status of the overall economy (i.e., State and <br /> <br />Federal), and the status of specialized industries. Mr. Wuensch then described <br /> <br />the role of the profeSSional developer and, io addition, cited accomplishments <br /> <br />of the EDC during its two and one-half years' existence as well as disapPOint- <br /> <br />ments in "losing" prospective industries to other locations. <br /> <br />--..---...."--------.---- <br />
