<br />TUESDAY, JULY 1, 1986 <br /> <br />In assuming the position of Mayor, Mr. Oakes expressed his determination to exert his <br /> <br />best efforts in the service of all citizens of Martinsville, as did newly-elected <br /> <br />Councilman McClain. Mayor Oakes also indicated his strong belief in--and support of-- <br /> <br />the councilmanic-manager form of government, under which the City of Martinsville <br /> <br />operates. In citing goals and challenges facing the Council, Mayor Oakes acknowledged <br /> <br />with appreciation the efforts and accomplishments by Councilman Cole during the immedi- <br /> <br />ate past four years in which Mr. Cole served as Mayor. Vice-Mayor Williams also ex- <br /> <br />pressed dedication toward serving the citizens of Martinsville, with special emphasis <br /> <br />on education, jobs for all, and better living conditions. Meanwhile, Councilman Cole <br /> <br />extended congratulations to Mr. Oakes upon being elected Mayor as well as expressed <br /> <br />his appreciation of the privilege and opportunity of serving the citizens as Mayor <br /> <br />during the past four years. Councilman Groden, congratulating both Mr. Oakes and Mr. <br /> <br />Williams (upon their being elected Mayor and Vice-Mayor, respectively), pointed to <br /> <br />goals and challenges with which the Council will be confronted the next few years. <br /> <br />Mayor Oakes then declared this meeting adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />Clerk of Council <br />
