TUESDAY, JULY 1, 1986

In assuming the position of Mayor, Mr. Oakes expressed his determination to exert his

best efforts in the service of all citizens of Martinsville, as did newly-elected

Councilman McClain. Mayor Oakes also indicated his strong belief in--and support of--

the councilmanic-manager form of government, under which the City of Martinsville

operates. In citing goals and challenges facing the Council, Mayor Oakes acknowledged

with appreciation the efforts and accomplishments by Councilman Cole during the immedi-

ate past four years in which Mr. Cole served as Mayor. Vice-Mayor Williams also ex-

pressed dedication toward serving the citizens of Martinsville, with special emphasis

on education, jobs for all, and better living conditions. Meanwhile, Councilman Cole

extended congratulations to Mr. Oakes upon being elected Mayor as well as expressed

his appreciation of the privilege and opportunity of serving the citizens as Mayor

during the past four years. Councilman Groden, congratulating both Mr. Oakes and Mr.

Williams (upon their being elected Mayor and Vice-Mayor, respectively), pointed to

goals and challenges with which the Council will be confronted the next few years.

Mayor Oakes then declared this meeting adjourned.

Clerk of Council
