Sc

TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 1986

.,...............

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of

Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor William C. Cole, Jr., presiding,

was held Tuesday, June 10, 1986, in the Council Chamber, City Hall,

beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, with the exception

of Councilman Clyde L. Williams (who was away from the City), as

follows: William C. Cole, Jr., Mayor; Eliza H. Severt, Vice-Mayor;

Alfred T. Groden; and L. D. Oakes.

After the invocation and Mayor Cole's cordial welcome to visitors

present, Council tentatively approved the summary of the minutes of

the regular meeting held May 27, 1986, pending receipt of the minutes

after Mr. Yeaman's return (he was out of the country on vacation).

There being no business from the floor, Mayor Cole proceeded with the

prepared agenda.

Mayor Cole opened the duly-advertised public hearing to hear comments

and suggestions as to an appointment to the School Board, noting that

the term of Mrs. Catherine R. Stone would expire June 30, 1986. City

Attorney Worthy stated that a State law passed in 1985 requires a

duly-advertised public hearing before an appointment can be made by

the Council. Mr. Worth H. Carter, Jr., Chairman of the School Board,

spoke on behalf of Mrs. Stone, commending her past experience and

valuable service on the Board, asking that she be reappointed for

another three-year term. Vice-Mayor Severt and Councilman Oakes
