00

TUESDAY, MAY 27, 1986

By letter (dated May 21, 1986) and in person, Mr. William W. Edwards, President of

the Martinsville Branch of the Martinsville/Henry County Voters League, re-apprised

Council of previously-expressed concerns with the one access to a large section of

the West End area of the City, the serious traffic "bottleneck" at the intersections

of Fayette Street, Memorial Boulevard, and West Church Street, and the need to return

Beaver Street, between West Fayette Street and West Church Street, to a two-way

street in order that it might satisfy the need for an alternate access to that

area of the City. In so re-apprising Council of these concerns, Mr. Edwards acknow-

ledged with pleasure that progress is being made (with the status thereof being re-

ported by City Manager Brown) in developing plans for the improvement of the afore-

mentioned intersection. City Manager Brown then indicated that he should be able to

present to Council a report on updated conditions, particularly those pertaining to

Beaver Street, within ninety days. Citizens appearing before Council and speaking

to the aforesaid concerns were Mr. Thomas J. Womack, of 200 Fourth Street, Mr. Joseph

W. Pritchett, of 1203 Maxine Road, Mr. William B. Muse, of 611 First Street, Mr.

Joseph E. Finley, of 1658 Roundabout Road, and an unidentified citizen (Mr. Lafayette

C. Jones?) residing at 501 Second Street.

Council acknowledged receipt of--and concurred with--City Manager Brown's recommen-

dation that the City take no action at this time to proceed with the refunding of the

City's General Obligation Water Bonds, as set forth in Mr. Brown's written report

dated May 21, 1986.

Vice-Mayor Severt reported on a recent meeting--which she attended--of the Senior

Citizens organization, at which meeting Mrs. Alpha Manson, of 103 Farmington Court,

was presented a distinguished service award.

-
