225

TUESDAY, MARCH 11, 1986

-,

Council unanimously approved--and authorized--the filing by the Martinsville Transporta-

tion Safety Commission of a "safety grant" application ("Mini-Grant Agreement") with the

Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles for a grant to $750.00 to finance the cost of in-

stalling "Fasten Seat Belts" signs at entrances/exits of the City's public parking lots

and City School parking lots.

,.,.....-,.

Council was informed by the West Piedmont Planning District Commission and by City Manager

Brown that the Blue Ridge Airport Authority is proposing certain improvements to the Blue

Ridge Airport's apron, taxiway, and access roads at an estimated cost of $350,000.00, of

which sum $315,000.00 will be sought from the Federal Government and $17,500.00 from the

Commonwealth of Virginia, with the remaining $17,500.00 to be supplied by applicant

through anticipated contributions of one-half thereof ($8,750.00) from the City of Martins-

ville and the other half from the Henry County Board of Supervisors, probably for fiscal

1987-88. Council was also informed that this proposed project is separate and apart from

that considered and acted upon at Council's recent February 11th meeting, for which pro-

ject City Manager Brown noted that 5010 of "applicant's share" (contrary to his prior under-

standing) is being requested by the Authority in its 1986-87 budget request of the City of

Martinsville and 50% from Henry County. In recommending that the West Piedmont Planning

District Commission "make a favorable comment" on the proposed second project, Council

directed that the Blue Ridge Airport Authority be advised (by letter from City Manager

Brown) that, in taking this foregoing action, the Council is in no way committed or obli-

gated to contribute any funds thereto and/or therefor.

Council was apprised by the West Piedmont Planning District Commission that the City of

Roanoke is proposing an improvement program for its Airport to cost an estimated

$2,651,890.00, for which Federal-State funding in the amount of $2,111,757.00 will be

sought. Because of some possible conflict between this proposed project and the findings
