212

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1986

of said proposed revision.

Mr. Worth H. Carter, Jr., Chairman of the City School Board, and Dr. James E. Calkins,

Superintendent of the City School System, appeared before Council and presented the

lowest of bids recently received for the replacing of roofs on the City's six school

buildings, being in the total of $708,008 (to which are to be added architect's fees

and an amount for contingencies) for which State Literary Fund loans have been

approved in the amount of $880,000 (based on cost estimates); however, inasmuch as

such loans must be limited to either the approved amount for each project or to actual

cost, whichever is lower, and inasmuch as the lowest bid received for the Martinsville

Junior High School project exceeds the Literary Fund Loan amount approved for this

project by some $10,500.00, excluding architect's fee and contingencies, Messrs.

Carter and Calkins indicated that local funds in this amount may be requested of City

Council. Messrs. Carter and Calkins also informed Council that, while the City School

Board's Literary Fund loan application--already approved--must await its "turn" on the

Literary Fund's list of approved projects and loans throughout the State of Virginia,

there is hope that the monies will be received during the current calendar year (i.e.,

1986), soom after the roof repairs-replacements have been completed at a now-projected

cost of $798,008.00 (excluding architect's fees and possible additional costs resulting

from damages in excess of that now known).

Council received, through City Manager Brown, the 1985 Annual Report of the City's

Fire Department and, also, comments thereon in person by Fire Chief John Lloyd Gregory.

This report included statistics pertaining to the number of alarms during the year,

types of fires, damages to buildings and contents, insurance and losses, value of

property saved, and fire prevention-inspection activities. Chief Gregory noted, too,

that there were no major fires during the year and no lives were lost from fire-related
