<br />:.:J'II" <br /> <br />1 :1 ') <br />i. )/ ".."J <br /> <br />TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1987 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, October 13, 1987, in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All memberst with the exception of <br /> <br />Councilman William C. Colet Jr't who was absent because of illness, were present, <br /> <br />viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. Williams, Vice-Mayor; Alfred T. Groden; and <br /> <br />Allan McClain. <br /> <br />After the invocation and Mayor Oakes' cordial welcome extended visitors present, <br /> <br />Council recognized--and presented tokens of Council's appreciation to--the following <br /> <br />recently-retired employees: <br /> <br />James B. Jones, Jr., Building Official, 28 years of service; <br /> <br />John W. ("Red") Lovell, Assistant Fire Chief, 40 years of service; <br />and <br /> <br />George L. Luke (in absentia), Purchasing Agent, 36 years of service. <br /> <br />Council unanimously approved, as recorded, the minutes of its regular meeting held <br /> <br />September 22, 1987. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly-published notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a petition <br /> <br />filed by Mr. George W. Sawyer, Realtor, as amended and recommended for Council's <br /> <br />approval by the City's Planning Commission, seeking the rezoning from R-6 Residential <br /> <br />and/or P-2 Professional to C-IA Commercial of those properties fronting the south <br /> <br />side of Market Street, between Ellsworth and Maple Streets, as well as the portion of <br /> <br />the property constituting the parking lot of the Virginia Department of Motor <br /> <br />Vehicles fronting the west side of Maple Street.
