TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1987

,,--

A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia,

with Vice-Mayor Clyde L. Williams presiding in the absence of Mayor L. D. Oakes

(who was away from the City on vacation), was held Tuesday, August 25, 1987, in the

Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of Council, with

the exception of Mayor Oakes, were present, viz., Clyde L. Williams, Vice-Mayor;

William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan McClain.

~

After the invocation, and a cordial welcome extended by Vice-Mayor Williams to

visitors present, Council unanimously approved--as recorded--the minutes of its

regular meeting held August 11, 1987.

Mr. Bruce Dallas, of 211 Massey Street, appeared before Council and asked that

Council give consideration to providing public swimming facilities for the citizens

of Martinsville, particularly the young people who might not otherwise have an

opportunity to learn how to swim and whose use of such facilities would be of much

greater advantage to themselves and the City than remaining idle on street-corners,

as some now do because there's little else for them to do. Council unanimously

referred this request to City Manager Brown for his study and recommendations.

.-

Pursuant to duly-published public notice, Council conducted a public hearing on

W. H. Weaver Construction Company's application for a Special-Use Permit to allow

applicant to construct Phase II (consisting of forty-four apartment units) at

applicant's Martin's Landing complex situated off the north side of East Church

Street (Route 58 East) near the City's corporate limits. There being no objections

registered by anyone against this application and proposed Phase II project, Council

unanimously accepted the Martinsville Planning Commission's recommendation that

Council approve the application and authorize the issuance of a Special-Use Permit

for said proposed project, subject to compliance with specific conditions attached

,
,
