<br />TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1987 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />~,,- <br /> <br />with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, February 24, 1987, in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members were present, viz., <br /> <br />L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. Williams, Vice-Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. <br /> <br />Groden; and Allan McClain. <br /> <br />After the invocation and Mayor Oakes' cordial welcome extended to visitors present, <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />Council unanimously approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting held <br /> <br />February 10, 1987. <br /> <br />In accordance with statutory requirements and pursuant to duly-published notice, <br /> <br />Council conducted a public hearing on a proposal (recommended by the City's Planning <br /> <br />Commission) that properties situated on both sides of Brown Street, within the block <br /> <br />between the west side of Starling Avenue and the east side of Cleveland Avenue, now <br /> <br />zoned R-6 Residential, be rezoned to P-2 Professional. There being no objections <br /> <br />registered against this proposal, Mayor Oakes declared this public hearing closed; <br /> <br />whereupon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council accepted the <br /> <br />Planning Commission's recommendation and adopted the following ordinance effecting <br /> <br />said P-2 zoning and amending the City's Zoning Map accordingly: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular meeting assembled this twenty-fourth day of February, 1987, that <br />the Zoning Map of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, be--and is hereby-- <br />amended to the extent that properties situated on both sides of Brown <br />Street, within the block between the west side of Starling Avenue and the <br />east side of Cleveland Avenue, which are currently zoned R-6 Residential, <br />be and are hereby rezoned to P-2 Professional. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that, an emergency existing, this <br />ordinance shall be in force on and after February 25, 1987. <br /> <br />On behalf of the City's Police Department, Police Chief Terry L. Roop presented a <br /> <br />plaque to Mrs. Ola Williams, designating her as the Police Department's "Outstanding <br /> <br />Citizen of the Year" (for 1986) in appreciation and recognition of Mrs. Williams' <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />46~ <br />
