<br />West Piedmont Planning District Commission <br />Regional List of Desired Transportation Projects <br />Presented to the Commonwealth Transportation Board in Fall 2005 <br /> <br />Franklin Countv: <br /> <br />I) Pursue all safety improvements on Route 220, north and south, with special <br />consideration for the route through Boones MiI/ north to the franklin County/Roanoke <br />County line. <br />2) Pursue all available funding for the expedited completion of construction for Interstate <br />73. <br />3) Support for improving the alignment and widening of Route 122, from the Route 116 <br />intersection out to Hales ford Bridge, at the County line along with realignment of <br />Route J 16 and Route 122 intersection in Burnt Chimney. <br />4) Support for a feasibility study to construct a Route 40 bypass of Rocky Mount, from <br />Route 220 North over to Route 40 West at the Route 40 and Route 640 intersection. <br />S) Support a feasibility study to four-lane Route 40 East, from the Rocky Mount town <br />limits out to the County Line, and alternatively, out to the U.S. Route 29 Corridor in <br />Pittsylvania County. <br />6) Support for a Route 116 improvements feasibility study, including Route 116/Route 681 <br />intersection. <br />7) Accommodate pedestrian and bicycle access where feasible in future road improvements <br />in conjunction with the franklin County Trails Plan. <br />8) Support return of passenger rail service to the Roanoke Valley and construction of a <br />new Intermodal facility to enhance the region. <br /> <br />Rockv Mount <br />I) Replace existing bridge on South Main Street (US 220 Business) over Pigg River. <br />2) Widening and street improvements (including curb, guttering, and sidewalks) on Route <br />40 West from intersection of Floyd Avenue to west corporate limits, to include safety <br />improvements at the intersection of Floyd Avenue/Franklin Street, and include <br />replacement of bridge over Furnace Creek. <br />3) The creation of a commercial grade connector road from VA. Rt. 40 East to U.S. 220 <br />North. <br />4) Support the efforts to upgrade Route 220 in order to make it a safer highway. <br />5) Support of development of Interstate 73 from Roanoke to the VirginialNorth Carolina <br />line. <br />6) Support for Franklin County proposal to study and design a Route 40 East/40 West <br />bypass to lessen large volume truck traffic through the central business district. <br />7) Altering Franklin Street alignment at intersection of High Street to improve sight <br />visibility and elimination of safety hazard. <br />8) Safety improvements/sidewalks along Scuffling HiI/ Road. <br />9) Extension of Diamond Avenue to future Route 40 bypass. <br /> <br />Henrv Countv: <br />J) Support for the funding and construction of the U.S._Route 58 Improvement Program in <br />areas where it is currently incomplete. <br />2) Improvements to the Route 87/Route 220 intersection to include signals and new <br />acceleration and deceleration lanes. <br />3) Support for the funding and construction of a replacement bridge for U.S. Route 220 <br />Business in the Town of Ridgeway. <br />
