<br />June 13, 2006 <br /> <br />A regular work session of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />was held on June 13, 2006, in Council Chamber, Municipal Building, <br /> <br />beginning at 1 :00 P. M., with Mayor Joe Cobbe presiding. Council Members <br /> <br />present included: Joseph R. Cobbe, Mayor; Kimble Reynolds, Jr., Vice Mayor; <br /> <br />and Council Members James W. Clark, J. Ronald Ferrill, and Terry L. Roop. <br /> <br />Mayor Cobbe opened the meeting. <br /> <br />Mayor Cobbe read and presented a Resolution to retiring Fire Chief Jerry <br /> <br />Brock after which Chief Brock made some brief comments. Council Member <br /> <br />Ferrill made a motion to adopt the following Resolution as read, the motion was <br /> <br />duly seconded and carried by the following vote, all members voting: Vote: 5-0. <br /> <br />Yeas: (5) Cobbe, Reynolds, Roop, Ferrill, Clark. Nays: (0) None: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Jerry W. Brock has served as the Fire Chief for the City of Martinsville since <br />January I, 1997; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, he became a career firefighter on January 1, 1975 after serving as a volunteer for <br />five years; earned his lieutenant stripes in 1987 and was promoted to assistant chief in 1988; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during Chief Brock's tenure, the department added full emergency medical service, <br />including ambulance response and a part-time firefighter program to fill in for vacationing or <br />sick employees and serve as a recruiting tool to fill full-time vacancies; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during the past few years, the department has also ran major smoke detector <br />campaigns, door-to-door fire safety education, a monthly television call-in fire and home safety <br />show, fire hydrant cleaning and inspection and grant-funded business fire safety inspections and <br />the aggressive efforts led by Brock to keep the public safe through education, inspection and fire <br />suppression are paying off in lives saved; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Jerry W. Brock has announced his retirement from the Fire Department on July 1, <br />2006, after thirty and one-half years of service to our city; and <br />
