Roop <br /> <br />A CITY WITHOUT LIMITS <br /> <br />City Manager <br />Robert R, Collins <br /> <br />City Attorney <br />Eric H, Monday <br /> <br />Clerk of Council <br />Susan N, Johnson <br /> <br />M <br /> <br />Martinsville <br /> <br />Resolution Calling for <br />Virginia Tourism Corporation's Official Recognition <br />Of A <br />Southern Virginia Region <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is divided into 8 regions recognized by the Virginia <br />Tourism Corporation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, currently the area of Southern Virginia is included in the Virginia Tourism <br />Corporation's Central Region, which includes counties as far north as Madison, Greene and <br />Orange, counties as far west as Henry and as far east as Southampton; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this is the largest region in the Commonwealth of Virginia that is recognized by the <br />Tourism Corporation, containing over thirty counties; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the other regions recognized, excluding the central region, have two as the <br />minimum number of counties and twelve as the maximum number of counties; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Tourism Corporation has a separate section for each region in the <br />Virginia is for Lovers Travel guide that is the official tourism publication for the state; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Tourism Corporation has the same regions broken down on the <br />Virginia Tourism Corporation Website; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the counties and cities of Southern Virginia do not have equal editorial information <br />in the travel guide and on the website, because of the large size of the Central Region; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the counties and cities of Southern Virginia are trying to increase the numbers of <br />tourists and travelers to help the already economically and financially distressed area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, having a smaller, separately recognized Southern Region will be of major benefit <br />and importance to the work of tourism and economic development organizations, businesses, and <br />local governments in the Southern area of Virginia; now therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED that the Martinsville City Council, in regular session assembled February <br />14, 2006, unanimously supports the creation by the Virginia Tourism Corporation of a <br />recognized Southern Region as proposed; and <br /> <br />55 West Church Street P.O, Box 1112 Martinsville.
