M Martinsville

City Council
Agenda Summary

Meeting Date:
Item No:
Department:
Issue:

February 14, 2006
2.

Economic Development

Consider adoption of a resolution calling for Virginia Tourism
Corporation's Official Recognition of a Southern Virginia
Region.

Summary:

The Office of Tourism of the M-HC EDC is participating in a regional effort to
establish a new tourism region within Virginia. Martinsville is currently listed
within Central Virginia - which extends as far north as Madison County and
includes Petersburg, Charlottesville, and Lynchburg.

The proposed region will be called "Southern Virginia" and will generally
encompass much of "Southside Virginia." The new term for the area is being
introduced to help create a more positive image for marketing purposes.

The new, smaller region, will give more visibility to the participating localities in the
state travel guide and tourism website.

A resolution endorsing the proposed region is required by the state in order to
establish the designation.

David Rotenizer, Director of Tourism for the EDC, will be at your meeting to
answer any questions.

Attachments:

Resolution

Recommendations: Motion to approve
