Every child received a hot lunch and a snack every day and took a <br /> <br />field trip each Friday. Activities were provided in the core areas of character <br /> <br />and leadership development, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and <br /> <br />recreation and education and career development. <br /> <br />Council considered a presentation by Ellen Jessee, Chair of the <br /> <br />Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group, Dan River Basin <br /> <br />Association concerning their vision to promote pedestrian and bicycle <br /> <br />recreation throughout Martinsville and Henry County, including involvement in <br /> <br />plans for the replacement of the Fieldale Bridge across the Smith River. She <br /> <br />indicated that a demonstration trail is currently being built along the Smith <br /> <br />River near the former Henry County PSA treatment plant in Koehler. They <br /> <br />currently are in negotiations with Norfolk and Southern to acquire the right-of- <br /> <br />way to begin work on a rail trail extending from Fieldale into the city. She also <br /> <br />suggested eventual extension of the trail along the river to the city's wastewater <br /> <br />treatment plant. <br /> <br />Council was also invited to a West Piedmont Trails <br /> <br />Symposium on October 28, 2005 in Danville and Vice Mayor Reynolds <br /> <br />indicated that Danville was an excellent model for this program. <br /> <br />Council considered the demolition of the old YMCA building. City <br /> <br />Manager Collins indicated that main objective in proceeding at this time was to <br /> <br />have it completed before the landfill closes. After further discussion, Council <br />
