Building and Grounds Status Report <br />Page 7 <br /> <br />It is noted that the committee's measurements are approximate, and the members are not <br />professional building personnel. However, a discrepancy of 4,656 (25,162 - 20,506) <br />square feet reveals too much of a difference to discount. Committee members utilized <br />net or usable square footage. Did the other measurement utilize gross square footage, and <br />therefore account for "dead" or unusable space? The difference in calculations equates to <br />an approximate area of 68.24 feet squared. <br /> <br />The facility was built in 1937. It is therefore sixty-seven (67) years old. It was initially <br />occupied by Montgomery W~rd Company as a retail store bom 1937 until the late <br />1970's. It was vacant until 1976, when it became occupied by Phelps and Armstead, a <br />furniture retailer. This company remained there until 1981. Tultex Corporation, a textile <br />company, utilized the building as it's headquarters from 1981 until the mid 1990's. The <br />facility again remained vacant until it was renovated for use by the recently merged <br />Henry-Marfinsville Departraent of Social Services in 1997. <br /> <br />The Henry County Department of Social Services and the Maninsville Department of <br />Social Services officially merged Sune I, 1997, and the facility was occupied as one <br />department in September, 1997. At this time the facility was sixty (60) years old. It is <br />noted that the former social services buildings in Henry County and Marfinsville were <br />built in the 1970's; whereas, the present facility dates back to 1937. <br /> <br />The space and safety ismes heretofore nd~ are directly related to the nmount of <br /> <br /> <br />
