February 1,2005 <br /> <br />]0 <br /> <br />granting college is of paramount and overriding importance to the <br />wellbeing of our citizens, the rebirth of our economy and the cohesive <br />progress of the Southside region, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville wishes to show its commitment to a <br />new state institution in a tangible, measurable, positive manner, now, <br />therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />special session assembled February 1, 2005, that it does hereby support <br />the establishment by the Commonwealth of a new four-year, residential, <br />baccalaureate degree-granting college in Martinsville or Henry County; <br />and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that it does hereby pledge to <br />the Commonwealth the sum of $1 million (one million dollars) over the <br />next ten years, whether in direct cash contribution or through in-kind <br />services, including real property, to fund infrastructure improvements <br />necessary to the establishment of a four-year, residential, baccalaureate <br />degree-granting college by 2007; and <br /> <br />. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that this resolution be <br /> forwarded with due haste to the leadership of the Commonwealth. <br /> <br />Mr. Ferrill moved passage of the resolution, seconded by Mr. Roop. By voice <br /> <br />vote, council unanimously and without dissent supported the resolution. <br /> <br />Mr. Collins informed council that he, Mayor Cobbe and Vice-Mayor Reynolds will <br /> <br />present the resolution to Governor Mark Warner in a meeting at 11:45 Friday, February <br /> <br />4 in Richmond. <br /> <br />With no further business to conduct, Mr. Ferrill moved adjournment, seconded by <br /> <br />Mr. Roop, with concurrence of council.
