May 25, 2004 <br /> <br />Painter & Associates approving construction of a 6" water line extension to the <br /> <br />proposed development by the Interim City Manager. <br /> <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution designating a portion of <br /> <br />Commonwealth Boulevard directly in front of the Armory as being in honor of the <br /> <br />Martinsville/Henry County soldiers of Company H, 116th Infantry Regiment 29th Infantry <br /> <br />Division. Council Member Ferrill moved to adopt the following Resolution; the motion <br /> <br />was duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - <br /> <br />0; Yeas (5) - Cobbe, Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy, <br />France in June of 1944, many American soldiers fought and died as the <br />Allied forces mounted one of the largest military invasions in history, <br />ultimately bringing to a close the war in Europe; and <br />WHEREAS, Company H of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry <br />Division participated in the invasion; and <br />WHEREAS, Company H was comprised of soldiers from numerous <br />locations; however, Company H was partly filled with Martinsville/Henry <br />County men, much more so than by soldiers from anywhere else; and <br />WHEREAS, of all Allied troops who hit the beaches of Normandy on June <br />6th, 1944, the 29th Infantry Division took the heaviest casualties; and <br />WHEREAS, of all of the 29th regiments who participated, the 116th <br />suffered the most casualties; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Madinsville, Virginia in <br />regular session assembled May 25, 2004, that said Council hereby <br />acknowledges the sacrifices made by all during the D-Day invasion on <br />June 6th, 1944, in particular Company H, 116th Infantry Regiment of the <br />29th Infantry Division, said Company composed of many soldiers from the <br />Martinsville/Henry County area; and <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, that Council hereby authorizes the erection of two (2) signs along <br />the section of Commonwealth Boulevard directly in front of the National <br />Guard Armory, dedicating this section of Commonwealth Boulevard in <br />recognition and honor of the Martinsville/Henry County soldiers of <br />Company H, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. <br /> <br />Council considered, on second reading, of Ordinance 2004-9 establishing the <br /> <br />compensation for the new City Manager. Council Member Ferrill moved to adopt the <br /> <br /> <br />
