Enclosure <br /> <br />Martinsville <br />A CITY WITHOUT LIMITS <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, one key to maintaining the vitality of communities is the health and physical well being of <br />its citizens, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, one key to maintaining economically viable companies is to maintain a workforce that is <br />healthy physically, mentally and emotionally, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, all residents of Martinsvfile should be concerned with their health and the health of their <br />children and families as a key to economic gro*vth and progress, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, obesity is a preventable medical condition that damages the vitality of residents and thus <br />erodes their quality of life and the quality of their communities, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a study commissioned by the Harvest Foundation of Martinsville's health care issues and <br />needs indicates that coronary disease and diabetes, two diseases related to or caused in large measure by <br />obesity, are problems prevalent in our community, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, citizens in Martinsville have access to a wide array of recreational opportunities, parks, <br />public and private facihties, and medical practitioners, all components available to assist each resident in <br />finding, attaining and maintaining a proper and appropriate weight, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Mayor is participating in the local Fox television network affiliate's Mayors' Weight <br />Loss Challenge in an effort to highlight the need for public a*vareness of health issues as they relate to <br />obesity and the need for fitness; now therefore <br /> <br />I, M. Gene Teague, Mayor of the City of Martinsvflle, do hereby proclaim May as <br /> <br />Fitness & Healthy Weight Awareness Month <br /> <br />in the City, and in so doing, challenge the Citizens of Martinsville to explore, pursue and take advantage <br />of recreational and fitness activities that lead to reductions in the community's obesity, heart disease and <br />diabetes rates, and to dedicate themselves to making a daily effort to monitor and improve their health <br />through fitness and activity. <br /> <br />SEAL <br /> <br />M.
