Enclosure

Martinsville

A CITY WITHOUT LIMITS

DATE:

September 4, 2002

TO:

Earl B. Reynolds, Jr., City Manager

FROM:

Leon Towamicki, Director of Public Works

SUBJECT: Recycling

Attached is a summary of the operation of the unmanned drop off site for recyclables
located on Market Street between Cleveland Avenue and Starling Avenue. This
summary covers the three month period of May 2002 through July, 2002.

As noted for the period, 42,387 pounds of material were collected, and the City's net cost
was $1,895.25 which includes a credit of $128.70 for the value of aluminum cans. As
outlined in a previous memorandum, the City's costs for this operation include a monthly
fee for rental of the containers, a haul/transport fee when the containers are emptied, and
a processing fee for glass and plastics. Additionally, assuming the Cky's landfill is filled
to capacity by December, 2007, the 42,387 pounds of recycled material represents a
saving of landfill air space of approximately 42 cubic yards.

LET

C:Wiy Doeuments~Solid WastekSolid Waste 2002~Recycling Report - September.doc

55 West Church Street P.O.
