the Virginia Apprenticeship Council, the school, the student and the student's parents or
guardians will outline the kinds of work experiences and instruction the student will
receive.

Cosmetology Program: Through a partnership with People's Choice Beauty
Salon/Academy, students will be offered the opportunity to learn a skill that puts them in
demand in the labor market. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, job
opportunities for cosmetologists are favorable due to the growing demand for these types
of services. The overall employment of personal appearance workers is projected to
grow for all occupations through 2010 because of increasing population, incomes, and
demand for cosmetology services. Opportunities will be better for those licensed to
provide a broad range of services. In the cosmetology program, students will study hair,
skin, and/or nails and their related care. Students will study and prepare in a clinical lab
setting, using mannequins and live models for manipulative skill practice. The program
will emphasize safety and sanitation, communication, and management skills. The
competency completions will prepare the students for the Virginia Board of Cosmetology
licensing exam.

Out-of-School Youth Program: Piedmont Community Services (PCS) will designate one
full-time person to provide clinical case management to youth and their families. PCS
will provide counseling/residential services and prevention services. The primary goals
of the services provided will focus on high school completion, student achievement and
citizenship, and a safe and drug-flee community.

The Reality Store: This is a model program used to assist young people in making good
choices for their future. This program also assists them in finding out what life is like as
an adult, how much it costs to live the way they want to live, and information on different
jobs and likely salaries. This activity will be used as both a career readiness strategy and
pregnancy prevention strategy.
