Maior Activities/Programs

ISAEP Program: According to the Virginia Department of Education, "Regulations of
the GED Testing Service (GEDTS) of the American Council on Education (ACE)
prohibits GED testing of any person enrolled in school. Because the GED is a test created
for adults, and because it is recognized as the equivalent of a high school diploma, the
regulation was established to help keep young adults in attendance at secondary schools,
reserving the use of the GED test for persons who need a second chance. Because more
and more of the young adult population need a second chance, Virginia was the first state
to request that the GED Testing Service approve use of the GED, under close
supervision, with students enrolled in alternative education or at-risk programs in the
public schools." Therefore, the State provides approximately $16,000 per school year to
Martinsville City Public Schools to operate an ISAEP (youth GED) program. However,
with a growing number of students who participate in the program, the amount of funding
provided is not sufficient to offer the type of program that these youth need to prepare
themselves academically and for the world of work. Therefore, Martinsville City Public
Schools will supplement this funding with WIA funds to allow for a full-time person to
provide GED preparation and occupational skills training to this population.

Mentoring Program: Big Brothers Big Sisters will implement the Big Buddy mentoring
program at Martinsville Middle School. In this program, screened mentors will meet
with children selected by school personnel for an hour each week to provide support and
encouragement and to model responsible adult behavior.

Student-Apprenticeship Program: Patrick Henry Community College's Student
Apprenticeship Program will expand the skilled work fome of the community by
providing youth with career opportunities in the skilled trades while completing their
high school education. High school students will be linked with business and industry,
allowing students to begin career training before completing high school. Apprentices
will be emi~loyed and learn on the job. They will receive formal related instruction in
school.
