Enclosure

June 27, 2002

The Honorable Mayor and City Council
CiW of Martinsville
Martinsville, Virginia

Council Members,

The Planning Commission, at a meeting on June 27, 2002, conducted a public hearing
on a request from city staff to amend Zoning Ordinance Section XIII, Business and
Manufacturing Districts. The proposed amendments place uses allowed by right and
uses allowed by special use permit along side each other in their respective business
and manufacturing zoning district sections of the ordinance.

In additior[ numerous outdated terms were removed and replaced by current planning
tenstinology and other terms changed for ease of understanding. One substantive
change proposed is removal of transient storage of hazardous waste as a use allowed
by special use permit. Otherwise the changes proposed are largely administrative
and organizational in nature and with illustrations added to improve understanding and
clarity.

Following discussion of the proposed amendments, in which no opposition was
expressed, the Planning Commission voted unanimously (6-0) to recommend to City
Council that the Zoning Ordinance be amended as proposed (see attachment). The
Planning Commission respectfully submits the above request for Council's further
consideration.

Sincerely,

James Barnett, Secretary

Wayne D. P. Knox
Planning/Zoning & Housing Manager

Attachment

Cc: James Barnett
