Januaw 8,2002 <br /> <br /> A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, was held on January 8, 2002, in Council Chamber of the Municipal Building, <br />beginning at 7:30 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree presiding. Council Members present <br />included: Mark A. Crabtree, MayOr; M. Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council <br />Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, J.' Ronald Ferrill, and Terry L. Roop. <br /> <br /> Following the invocation by Council Member Dallas, Mayor Crabtree welcomed <br />everyone to the meeting. <br /> <br /> Council Member Ferrill moved to adopt the Minutes of December 6, 2001, as <br /> amended, and December 11, 2001, as presented; the motion was duly seconded and <br /> carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, <br /> <br />Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays (0)- None. <br /> <br /> Lisa Barker, Executive Director of the <br />Association, presented a plaque recognizing <br /> <br />Martinsville Uptown Revitalization <br />that the Uptown Farmer's Market <br /> <br />landscaping project had been awarded first place by Virginia Beautiful, Inc. The project <br />was a joint effort between Gateway Streetscape, the Farmer's Market, and the City <br />Public Works Department. <br /> <br /> Klm Adkins, Executive Vice President of the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber <br />of Commerce, made a presentation requesting the City implement a two percent lodging <br />tax, which would help to fund the community's tourism initiatives. She stated that it will <br />be in the County of Henry's legislative packet, but, if the General Assembly approves it, <br />they will not enact it until a complete plan and budget are presented as to how the funds <br />will be expended. Vice Mayor Teague suggested that the promotion of local sports <br />tournaments and outlet shopping may increase motel/hotel traffic. Council Member <br /> <br /> <br />
